![]() ![]() Except, Bartholomew wasn't specialising in London during the Blitz and doesn't know what exactly the practicum will require of him. ![]() ![]() In his time, historians are sent back via time machine to witness history as it happened. In Fire Watch, Bartholomew is sent back to St Paul's during the Blitz to take his history practicum. I had no intention of reading these new books when they were released this year because of my lack of interest in WWII but now I will of course be making my way there. Fire Watch is Willis' first WWII story, originally published in 1982, and in fact eventually leads the way round to her new two volume novel Blackout and All Clear. I knew going in it was a WWII story but my respect for Willis was such that I decided to go in anyway. It was with this in mind that I grabbed a copy of Fire Watch, a limited edition of this Nebula and Hugo winning novelette was printed by WSFA Press this weekend for Capclave. She has so much to say about so many things and what she has to say is *informed*. Having spent time with her at Capclave this weekend, I realised after getting to know her a little bit that I would indeed love what she writes. ![]() She has a sharp mind, keen wit and great intelligence. Many people have mentioned Willis to me as in "you'd quite like her" but not "why" I would like her. It turns out that there is nothing quite so offputting as people telling you what you should read. Girliejones I must confess that I've never read anything by Connie Willis before. ![]() ![]() SIDELIGHTS: Donna Fletcher has written romance novels with a variety of settings, including the American West in frontier times and Ireland in the Middle Ages, and has focused on subjects from witchcraft to Scottish clan warfare. I certainly didn't. The Milk Carton series was filled with definitely-not-YA references. It's heavy stuff, but you'd think Cooney would've toned down the drama for a pre-teen audience, right? Also known as the Janie Johnson series, Milk Carton and its three sequels followed the life of Janie, a 15-year-old girl who, after discovering her younger self's face on, yes, a milk carton, realizes she'd been kidnapped. ![]() Cooney with plenty of material that went way over my 11-year-old head. ![]() Before long, I was back to my own demographic - books actually meant for pre-teens like me.Īs it turns out, though, even some of those supposedly "YA" novels had their fair share of adult content - such as The Face on the Milk Carton series, a group of beloved books by Caroline B. They were novels I might've been better off waiting a few years before tackling: The Lord of the Rings (too confusing), The Red Pony (unbearably boring), The World According to Garp ( terrible at 11, but a masterpiece at 20). Predictably, this presented a problem: Most of those were works not quite meant for my age. I read quickly, though, and soon, I was forced to move onto the books on my parents' shelves. Growing up, I was an avid reader, grabbing all the Judy Blume and Lois Lowry novels I could get my hands on. ![]() ![]() ![]() Handprints too, but they are harder, as babies tend to clench their fist! I was trying to come up with a craft project that you could do with babies (I have a couple of loyal readers itching to get stuck in, but their little ones are indeed still too little). This helps us focus our creative activities a little and when stuck for something to do, grab a book for inspiration!! We love these projects, as we love books and we love art.
